Blessing of the Hounds

  • Cameron’s Meadow- Buchan Field 225 Mile Away Lane Southern Pines, NC, 28387 United States (map)

Each Thanksgiving morning, a long-standing and distinctive tradition takes place in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The Moore County Hounds welcome the public to their Opening Meet for the annual Blessing of the Hounds. Rooted in a practice that dates back to the Middle Ages, this ceremony officially ushers in the foxhunting season and brings together riders, hounds, and more than a thousand spectators to honor community, sport, and heritage.

A treasured Southern Pines tradition for over a century, the Blessing of the Hounds will be held on Thursday, November 27th. Celebrate Thanksgiving by attending this memorable event in person, hosted by the non-profit organization Preserve the Sandhills. It’s a delightful way to kick off the holiday season. The Blessing begins promptly at 10:00 a.m., so visitors are encouraged to allow extra timeβ€”at least an hourβ€”for parking and the walk from Lyell’s Meadow to Buchan Field.

Those interested in securing a prime tailgating location can contact Moore County Hounds for additional information. Please note that pets are not permitted. As one of North Carolina’s oldest recognized foxhound packs and among the few remaining private ones, Moore County Hounds is proud to host this special gathering, with a limited number of VIP tailgate spots available.
