🚂✨ All Aboard the Magical Christmas Train

Our Favorite Holiday Tradition near Moore County

There’s something about the Christmas season in Moore County that feels extra magical. Maybe it’s the glow of the twinkling lights around the Village, or the way small-town traditions still sparkle with that nostalgic charm. But for our family, Christmas doesn’t officially begin until we board the Magical Christmas Train departing from Star, North Carolina (just a 30-minute drive from Pinehurst).

It’s one of our favorite holiday traditions, a cozy ride that captures all the best parts of the season: twinkling lights, carols, Santa himself, and delicious hot chocolate.

Tickets sell out quickly each year — be sure to book early to secure your spot!

All Aboard the Christmas Train

Each year, families gather at Starworks — a gem in itself and well worth arriving early to explore the café, taproom, ceramics and glassworks — at 100 Russell Drive in Star. Bundled up in coats, kids clutch their tickets while parents balance cocoa cups. From the moment you step aboard, you can feel the holiday excitement.

The historic passenger cars are beautifully restored, with the kind of cozy diner booths and polished details that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. As the train begins its 50-minute ride, carols fill the air, twinkling lights flicker outside your window, and the smell of sugar cookies and hot chocolate makes everything feel right in the world.

A Visit From Santa

Halfway through the ride, just as you’re about to turn back toward the station, you’ll hear a few excited whispers — “He’s here!”

Santa makes his way through the cars, greeting families, chatting with kids, and stopping for photos. It’s the perfect mix of excitement and wonder — one of those moments that reminds you how fleeting and magical this age really is.

Cozy Comforts & Classic Cars

Every passenger is treated to hot chocolate in a souvenir cup (a favorite keepsake for our kids) and a giant sugar cookie that barely makes it home. You’ll find tables and cozy seating for 2–4 in the Family Class Double Diners, while the Summit View Dome Car offers panoramic views from above — a 360° look at twinkling lights stretching across the countryside.

The Double Diners include classic diner-style seating for 2–4 guests, large windows to the side of each train car.

Enjoy panoramic views of the twinkling lights from both the sides and above! This railcar features seating for 20 on the lower level and 66 seats upstairs in the dome — offering a 360° view for every passenger.

Depending on the seating level, adult and child tickets range from $49–$64 each, with lap infants (23 months and younger) riding free. Rides depart at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM on select dates from December 3–20.

Before and After the Ride

When my kids were little (under 3), they almost always fell asleep on the ride back — the excitement of seeing Santa mixed with the gentle sway of the train was the perfect lullaby. And if they happened to wake up when we deboarded, the magic didn’t end there. Families can stroll the decorated station grounds, grab a bite from local food trucks, or pop inside Starworks to explore some more.

Make It Your Own

Our family has made it a tradition for the boys to wear matching Christmas pajamas for the ride — because why not lean into the festive spirit? Between the cocoa, the carols, and the squeals when Santa arrives, it’s one of those simple, joy-filled memories that anchor our holiday season.

If you’re looking to start your own local Christmas tradition, this is it. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, the Magical Christmas Train is one of Moore County’s sweetest ways to slow down, savor the season, and make memories that last well beyond the holidays.

Seats go fast (especially weekends!), so grab your tickets early to make sure you’re all seated together!
